El año pasado, Mimoco e Infectious, lanzaron un concurso para diseñar un juguete / flash drive llamado Mimobot.

Tras someter a mas de 600 diseños a votación y evaluaciones por parte de diseñadores, artistas gráficos y gente de la compañía Mimoco; Mictlantecuhti, el personaje que desarrollé, quedó seleccionado entre los tres mejores.

Finalmente, tras meses de desarrollo y muchos e-mails de por medio, sale a la venta el dispositivo con capacidades de 2GB, 4GB, 8GB y 16GB. Además, incluyewallpapers, icons y avatars como contenido exclusivo.

Hoy reciví un e-mail de parte de Aarting con las siguientes fotos del molde aprovado para la figura Blankie. Posteriormente van a hacer el molde de producción y comenzarán la decoración del arte.

Luego postearé más fotografías de la producción.

Today I received an e-mail by Aarting with the following pictures images of the approved wax mold for the Blankie figure. They will now create the production mold, and start the artwork deco.

Ya esta montado mi cartel "Sonrisas a la muerte" en el MUMEDI como parte de la exhibición "A la muerte con una sonrisa". La muestra estará abierta al público del 11 de octubre de 2009 al 28 de febrero de 2010 en el Museo Mexicano del Diseño ubicado en Av. Francisco I. Madero 74 Colonia Centro Histórico en México D.F.

Además, el cartel esta a la venta en MUMEDIshop (tienda del museo) por $298.00 pesos y si se ordena fuera del Distrito Federal o fuera del país, se enviará por paquetería (en este caso favor de contactar al museo al Tel: +52 (55) 5510 8609 / Tel/Fax: +52 (55) 55 10 8771 / e-mail: contacto@mumedi.org)

My poster "Sonrisas a la muerte" is now part of MUMEDI's art show "A la muerte con una sonrisa" from October 11, 2009 through February 28, 2010 in the Mexican Museum of Design located at Avenida Francisco I. Madero 74 Colonia Centro Historico in Mexico City.

Feliz día de los muertos!!!

El presente trabajo es una interpretación personal del día de muertos en mi país. En él quise combinar elementos del altar tradicional con algunos símbolos de situaciones que pueden causarnos la muerte en el día a día. También incluí algunas representaciones de problemáticas sociales, por ejemplo: el narcotráfico, contaminación, racismo, etc...

El ritmo y diversidad cromática de los elementos representan la festividad de la fecha y las sonrisas representan la contradicción mexicana a otras culturas de reírnos de la muerte sabiendo que es un destino inevitable y lo mejor que podemos hacer es sonreir.

Diseñado para ser impreso en un formato de 60 cm x 90 cm.

The present work is a personal interpretation of the Day of the Dead in my country. I wanted to combine elements of traditional altar with some symbols of situations that can cause death. I also included some representations of social problems, such as: Narco Trafficking, pollution, racism, etc ...

The color and ritm of the elements represent the festiveness of the date and the smiles represent the Mexican contradiction to other cultures to laugh at death knowing that it is an inevitable destination and the best we can do is smile.

Designed to be printed in a format of 60 cm x 90 cm.

Yei: platform toy

Este es Yei, mi diseño para el nuevo concurso de Aarting. Se trata de un juguete "plataforma" de vinilo, el cual si llegara a ser producido, tendría una altura de 4.5 pulgadas y se lanzaría una edición limitada del mismo en 8 pulgadas de alto.

Su nombre viene del dialecto nahuatl, y significa tres. Decidí llamarlo así debido a que Yei puede ser tres personajes en un mismo cuerpo.

Su cabeza puede ser removida, sus brazos y piernas son articuladas y sus pies pueden voltearse hacia el lado que se quiera exhibir.

Las votaciones se abrieron hace unos momentos y durarán hasta el 15 de noviembre.

This is Yei, my design for the new Aarting contest. This is a "platform" vinyl toy, which if it gets to be produced, would be 4.5 inches tall and a limited edition version would have an 8 inches high.

The name comes from the Nahuatl dialect, meaning three. That's because Yei can be three characters in one same body.

The head can be removed, the arms and legs are articulated and feet can flip to the side you want to display.

Voting is now open and will last until November 15th.

Aarting acaba de publicar el próximo diseño que formará parte de Blankie Designer Series 1: Walking Zombie by JEC.

Aarting es una nueva compañía de Nueva York dedicada a la producción de productos de arte en ediciones limitadas, y Blankie es su primer juguete plataforma. Su primer lanzamiento será una serie compuesta por 12 diseñadores y está programada para comercializarse en marzo del presente año a nivel mundial.

Los diseños ganadores se van publicando periódicamente en el Foro de la compañía y hoy le tocó al mío. Espero que les guste.

Aarting have just published the next design that will be part of the Blankie Designer Series 1: Walking Zombie by JEC.

Aarting is a new company based in New York dedicated to produce limited edition art products and Blankie is their first platform toy. Their first launch will be a series by 12 designers and is schedule to be sold on march of this year arround the world.

The winner designs are being published every few weeks in the company's Forum and today was the turn of mine. Hope you guys like it.

La Creación Maya

Esta pieza es para Bang! una exposición sobre diversos mitos de la creación. Yo escogí ilustrar la creación maya del Popol Vuh:

Los dioses creadores, en un tiempo estático, acordaron crear el mundo. Estas deidades o Dios andrógino, recibe varios nombres asociados con su función, pero todos ellos son Gucumatz (Serpiente Quetzal). La finalidad de la creación del mundo era que este sirva como habitación de un ser que tendrá por misión venerar y alimentar a los dioses: el hombre. Esta deidad hace emerger la tierra y crea a los diferentes seres vegetales y animales por medio de la palabra. Luego se aboca a la formación del hombre. Primero hizo hombres de barro que no adquirieron vida, por lo que fueron destruidos por un diluvio. Buscando una materia mas solida, forma hombres de madera, que aunque lograron reproducirse, no fueron consientes, y no pudieron cumplir con la finalidad de los dioses por lo que se transformaron en monos y su mundo desapareció bajo una lluvia de resina ardiente. Finalmente, los dioses, formaron un nuevo hombre con la masa del maíz, la materia sagrada, el cual ya reconoció a los dioses y asumió su misión sobre la Tierra. Los primeros hombres formados fueron cuatro: Balam Quitzé, Balam Acab, Mahucutah e Iquí Balam. El Sol y la Luna surgen al lado del hombre de maíz. Ambos personajes bajan al inframundo a jugar pelota con los dioses de la muerte, mueren y resucitan, y luego suben al cielo transformados en el Sol y la Luna.

La fecha es: 31 de enero de 2009. Espero verlos ahí...

This piece is for Bang! an art show about creation myths. I chose the mayan creation from the Popol Vuh:

The creator gods, on a static time, agreed to create the world. This two deities or androgynous god, receive several names associated with his function, but they are all Gucumatz (Snake-Quetzal).

The purpose of the creation of the world was that this serve as a house for a being who will have as a mission venerate and feed the gods: the man.

This deity makes emerge the land and creates the different animals and vegetables by his word. Then, he focused on creating the man. First he made mud men but they did not came to life, so they were destroyed by a flood. Looking for a stronger substance or material, they formed wood men. They were able to reproduce their self but they had no conscience, they could not fulfill their god's purpose so they were transformed into monkeys and their world disappeared under a rain of burning resin. Finally the gods formed new men out of corn dough, the sacred matter. They finally recognized the gods and assumed their mission on earth. The first formed men were four: Balam Quitzé, Balam Acab, Mahucutah and Iquí Balam.

The Sun and the Moon arise at the same time with men, both characters went to the underworld to play ball with the gods of death, they died and resurrected, and went up to the sky transformed into the Sun and the Moon.

Distrito 10 estará presentando Veintidos durante diciembre. Esta vez hice algunos cambios en my pieza y personalicé un juguete de vinilo para que se pareciera al personaje de El Loco.

Distrito 10 will be hosting Veintidos during december. This time I have made some changes on my piece to add something different to the expo, plus I have customized a vinyl toy to look just like The Fool character.

El Loco

Esta es la pieza que estaré presentando en la exhibición Veintidos: interpretaciones gráficas de los arcanos mayores el próximo sábado 1/nov/2008.

Para el Loco la vida es una aventura. El Loco desafía a explorar nuevos terrenos, a pasar a la acción, a buscar nuestra verdad y vivir la vida como una aventura.

Simbolicamente es representado como un hombre joven, que camina acompañado de un perro.

Parece un peregrino o un vagabundo buscando un lugar donde poder encajar. Ante sus ojos ve nacer a la madre Naturaleza. Algunos creen que el Loco es demasiado inocente, pero su inocencia lo sostiene y le trae alegría.

El perro simboliza las fuerzas de la naturaleza y el lado animal del hombre, en armonía con el espíritu que actúa a partir del instinto. Si niegas tu ser interior, se volverá feroz. Obedécele y se mostrará benigno.

Lleva una especie de bolsa que representa los pesares del pasado. En su mano derecha lleva una rama que actúa de bastón, como si le sirviera de apoyo no físico, sino emocional.

En el Tarot de Marsella el Loco se corresponde con el número 0, y es considerado la clave 22. Representa el todo y la nada. Es el caos primordial que hay antes de la manifestación física. Es muy usual que esta figura represente al consultante. Los Arcanos Mayores representan el camino que el alma recorre en esta vida, un camino de conocimiento y perfección. El Loco simboliza el inicio de este viaje. Crea su futuro en el momento presente, no en un momento pasado o futuro. Pasado y futuro son una carga innecesaria.

I'm too lazy to traduce the past text in spanish so I'll just paste a fragment of the simbolism of this card according to Wikipedia...

The Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world. On his bag are all the possessions he might need. He is accompanied by a dog, sometimes seen as his animal desires, sometimes as the call of the "real world", nipping at his heels and distracting him. He is seemingly unconcerned that he is standing on a precipice, apparently about to step off.

The number 0 is a perfect significator for the Fool, as it can become anything when he reaches his destination. Zero plus anything equals the same thing. Zero times anything equals zero. Zero is nothing, a lack of hard substance, and as such it may reflect a non-issue or lack of cohesiveness for the subject at hand.

Yo interpretaré la carta de El loco y junto a 21 artistas más la muestra será sin duda toda una experiencia este 1/nov/2008.

El pasado primero de agosto de 2008, JEC y otros 17 artistas gráficos e ilustradores dieron vida a Espejito Espejito, una exposición colectiva de arte en Galería Plástica.

El concepto de la exhibición era representar la personalidad del artista a travez de un autoretrato.

The past august first of 2008, JEC and other 17 graphic artists and illustrators gave life to Espejito Espejito, a collective artshow in Galería Plástica.
